Fighting Fires

Bushfire at Table Mountain, Cape Town, South Africa, 2006

<< Previous

In January 2002, more than 10,000 firefighters fought huge bushfires in the Blue Mountains close to Sydney. Volunteer Ministers worked 24/7 until those fires were completely under control, assisting community authorities, delivering hundreds of assists and providing any support actions needed. When the danger was over the Chief Executive Officers of the Country Fire Service, sent the following words of thanks: "This bushfire was one of the largest and most difficult to combat. Because of your support, the Country Fire Service was able to maintain an effective fire fighting force."

In February 2006, at the other side of the world, huge fires burned out of control on the mountains that surrounded three quarters of Cape Town in South Africa. Volunteer Ministers mobilized immediately and set up camp at the Joint Operations Center at the foot of the mountains. Working around the clock for 60 straight hours, they worked beside local authorities and disaster relief crews, providing food, water and assists to the 500 firefighters and rescue personnel throughout the entire disaster zone.

"Please accept our sincere appreciation and gratitude for your unselfish willingness to assist the Fire and Rescue Services during the recent fires on Table Mountain and vicinity. "The manner in which you offered your valuable time to obtain the refreshments to ensure that the firefighters were in an excellent condition to continue fighting the fires for long periods will always be remembered by our staff. We are aware that you spent 3 days (60 hours continuous) at our command post and a number of your staff did not have any rest during this period. I know that my staff are extremely grateful and it will remain a topic of conversation among them for a long time to come. Some even went as far as expressing their appreciation in the local newspapers.

"Never in the history of the City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services, as far as I can recall, have we experienced such love and kindness and we hope that the excellent relationship that was built during those three days will continue to prosper in the future."
